Sinopec PVA 088-60, also identified under the legacy designation PVA 2688, is a partially hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol resin in which the polymerization degree and the alcoholysis level are encoded directly in the naming convention: 600 for the nominal degree of polymerization and 88.0 mol% for the hydrolysis degree. The commercial specification targets a hydrolysis range of 87.0–89.0 mol% and a 4 % solution viscosity measured at 20 °C of 7.0–10.0 mPa·s per GB/T 12010.2-2010. The resin is supplied as free-flowing white or slightly cream-colored granules with a bulk density of 0.45–0.65 g/cm³, an ash content not exceeding 0.5 % (GB/T 12010.6), volatile matter below 5.0 %, and an aqueous solution pH between 5 and 7. The balance of residual acetyl groups creates a polymer that dissolves readily in water at temperatures above 85 °C without the alkaline steeping step required by fully hydrolyzed grades, yet retains sufficient crystallinity to develop measurable film strength after drying.
The sequence distribution of vinyl acetate and vinyl alcohol units in the 88 mol% hydrolysis grade suppresses the continuous crystalline domains that dominate the morphology of fully hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohols (hydrolysis ≥ 98 mol%). As a result, the cold-water solubility window widens, and the melting endotherm shifts downward to approximately 180–190 °C, compared with 225–230 °C for a fully hydrolyzed grade of comparable chain length. Differential scanning calorimetry traces show a broader melting range and a lower enthalpy of fusion, indicating that blocked acetate groups act as chain defects. This structural difference translates directly into processing behavior: the 088-60 resin forms smooth, homogenous solutions in agitated tanks without the need for high-shear rotor-stator devices, whereas fully hydrolyzed material frequently requires prolonged cooking at 95–98 °C and may leave undissolved gel particles if temperature control drifts. In adhesive films, the residual acetate content promotes wetting on non-polar substrates, a property that is lost when hydrolysis exceeds 98 mol%.
Solution viscosity at 4 % (w/w) and 20 °C is the primary quality control metric for grade classification. For 088-60, the certified band of 7.0–10.0 mPa·s (Brookfield LV, spindle 1, 60 rpm) creates a rheological plateau that benefits both coating head stability and substrate penetration. When the solution is cast onto a polished chrome-plated belt and dried at 105 °C with forced air of 0.5 m/s, the resulting film exhibits a tensile strength in the range of 45–60 MPa and elongation at break of 150–250 % (GB/T 13022-1991), figures that shift perceptibly with even a ±0.5 mol% deviation in hydrolysis. Film haze remains below 3 % at 40 µm thickness when the ash content is kept under 0.3 %, but rises above 5 % if the sodium acetate residue from saponification exceeds 0.6 %.
Dried granules are hygroscopic: storage at relative humidity above 60 % induces lumping and complicates pneumatic conveying. For processes requiring free-flowing powder, the resin is pre-dried in a tray dryer at 80 °C for 2–3 hours using air with a dew point of −10 °C or lower. In solution preparation, the powder is added to cold water under high-speed dispersion (800–1200 rpm) before steam injection raises the batch temperature to 90 °C; this sequence avoids the formation of fish-eye agglomerates that plague systems where powder contacts hot water directly.
Vinyl acetate homopolymer and vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer emulsions rely on partially hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol as the primary protective colloid to control nucleation kinetics and final particle size distribution. In these systems, the 088-60 grade is charged at 4–8 % of the monomer phase, dissolved in the initial water heel, and held at 70–80 °C during the addition of a thermally activated initiator such as potassium persulfate. The surface activity imparted by residual acetate groups stabilizes primary particles in the 100–300 nm range, as measured by dynamic light scattering (ISO 22412:2017), and the narrow hydrolysis spread of ±1.0 mol% limits lot-to-lot variation in interfacial tension. Deviation beyond this band produces a bimodal particle size distribution and a measurable grit count (> 200 mg/kg on a 63 µm sieve). The low ash specification is critical here because electrolyte levels above 500 µS/cm (measured in a 4 % solution) compress the electrical double layer and degrade latex mechanical stability under high-shear post-adds such as calcium carbonate slurry. Reactor operators report that substituting a generic 88 mol% grade with an ash value of 0.8 % for 088-60 (ash ≤ 0.5 %) raises coagulum formation by a factor of 3 in adhesive formulations that contain 20 % filler.
Paper and paperboard adhesion is frequently quantified through wet-tensile retention after immersion in water at 23 °C for 24 hours (ASTM D829-97). Formulations based on 088-60 and a crosslinker such as glyoxal at 0.5–1.5 % of polymer dry weight yield a wet strength retention exceeding 50 % of the dry value, provided the drying profile includes a 110 °C zone for at least 15 seconds. The partial hydrolysis level balances cohesion development with chain mobility during the open time, which on high-speed folder-gluer lines is restricted to 2–5 seconds. If the hydrolysis grade moves to 92 mol%, wet tack drops sharply because the polymer begins to exhibit fully hydrolyzed-like hydrogen bonding with the cellulose hydroxyls, reducing the re-wetting capacity. Conversely, grades below 86 mol% produce excessive cold flow and delamination under stack compression at 40 °C and 70 % RH. Plant data from a multi-point gluing station show that an adhesive containing 10 % 088-60 (4 % solution added to a dextrin formulation) maintained a peel strength of 1.8 N/15 mm after 12 weeks of tropical warehouse exposure, while a control with a lower-DP (500), 88 mol% PVA fell to 1.1 N/15 mm.

| Key differentiation in application | Balanced film strength and solubility; precision protective colloid | Lower film strength, preferred where viscosity must remain below 7 mPa·s | Higher film toughness; used in extrusion lamination and high-strength warp sizing | Solvent and oil resistance; requires high-temperature cooking; minimal cold-water solubility |
Formulators seeking to replace 088-50 with 088-60 in an emulsion system must recalibrate the colloid loading downward by approximately 10–15 % to compensate for the higher solution viscosity and maintain the same particle size target. In textile warp sizing, mills that converted from a DP 500 grade to 088-60 reported a 5–8 % improvement in weaving efficiency on air-jet looms running 40s Ne cotton yarn, attributed to the increased abrasion resistance of the dried size film without raising the size box viscosity above 12 mPa·s at 85 °C. The concentration window is narrow: exceeding 10 % solids with 088-60 in the size box pushes viscosity beyond the suction limit of the pre-wet bath, causing squeezing-roller skidding.

Incompatibilities that must be strictly avoided in storage and compounding include extended exposure to concentrated mineral acids (pH <2) and strong oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide at concentrations exceeding 3 %, which cause chain scission and a rapid drop in solution viscosity. Contact with borate ions—borax or boric acid—triggers instantaneous crosslinking through diol-borate complexation, forming a non-spreadable gel; if a controlled set is required, borax must be titrated below 0.5 % of the PVA solids. Dialdehyde crosslinkers such as glyoxal or glutaraldehyde should be introduced into a cooled batch holding at 30 °C or below to delay premature viscosity build-up. No evidence supports any adverse interaction with amine-based additives, but primary amines can form Schiff bases with carbonyl impurities, resulting in yellowing at elevated cure temperatures above 160 °C.
