Dur-O-Set C-325 is supplied as a polyvinyl alcohol-stabilized aqueous polyvinyl acetate homopolymer dispersion. The product is intended for porous cellulosic and lignocellulosic substrate bonding in paper converting, carton sealing, tube winding, and wood assembly operations where the adhesive film is not specified for continuous water immersion. Nominal batch data include nonvolatile solids of 55.0 % by mass when tested in accordance with ASTM D1489, a pH of 4.5 at 25 °C measured by the glass-electrode method of ASTM E70, and a Brookfield RVT viscosity of 2,500 mPa·s at 23 °C using spindle #3 at 20 rpm per ASTM D1084 Method B. Density is reported at 1.06 g/cm³ by ASTM D1875. The dried unfilled polymer exhibits a glass transition temperature of approximately 33 °C by differential scanning calorimetry per ASTM D3418; the minimum film formation temperature is approximately 18 °C under ASTM D2354 conditions. The dispersion is milky white and is normally supplied in bulk tank trucks, totes, or drums; freeze protection above 5 °C is required because a freeze-thaw cycle can produce irreversible coagulum. These values are typical batch data, not a certificate-of-analysis release specification.
Because the aqueous carrier is the primary volatile component, the product’s wet-film rheology is governed by shear rate, temperature, and water loss. Viscosity increases as the wet film approaches the chalk point, and this increase is more pronounced on high-porosity recycled board. Field observations from roll-coater lines with closed recirculation loops show that the dispersion can sustain extended circulation through air-operated double-diaphragm pumps at tip speeds below 1.5 m/s without significant grit formation; however, high-shear gear pumps with tight clearances are not recommended because localized mechanical heat can exceed 40 °C and reduce shear stability. The product does not require two-part metering or external crosslinking; unlike catalyzed PVAc systems, pot life is governed by microbiological stability and moisture loss rather than bulk polymerization.
Unlike vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymers, Dur-O-Set C-325 does not contain an ethylene comonomer segment; the dried film therefore retains the higher glass transition temperature and higher modulus characteristic of polyvinyl acetate homopolymer. This distinction matters in rigid paperboard lamination, where a VAE film with Tg below 0 °C can exhibit excessive creep under sustained compressive load. In side-by-side compression shear testing on birch veneer bonded at 0.8 MPa for 2 h and conditioned per ISO 187, the PVAc homopolymer adhesive typically produces fiber-tear failure rather than cohesive creep; published data for this specific configuration is limited, and selection should be confirmed by end-use testing. VAE dispersions remain preferable for flexible film or low-surface-energy polymer bonding where low-temperature flexibility and elongation are required. The absence of ethylene also reduces the need for high-pressure polymerization; residual vinyl acetate monomer in Dur-O-Set C-325 is controlled below 0.10 % by ASTM D4827.
Under high-speed carton-sealing conditions, the product’s setting performance is influenced by board moisture, glue spread, and compression dwell. Open time is typically reduced by increased paperboard absorbency and by elevated drying-air velocity. In a folded carton line operating at 220 m/min with a 0.15 mm wet film applied by an air-over-hydraulic glue station, fiber-tear adhesion on recycled clay-coated board was recorded after 20 min compression at 0.4 MPa; bonds were then conditioned for 24 h at 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity before testing per ASTM D905. Wet tack must be evaluated under production conditions because published open-time data from bench tests does not account for line-specific belt pressure and nip dwell.
When ambient humidity exceeds 60 %, the drying rate of the wet adhesive film falls sharply; board surfaces conditioned above 8.5 % moisture content can delay fiber-tear development and increase blocking tendency in the delivery stack. The process window for a hybrid infrared/convection drying tunnel is therefore maintained within ±5 °C of 82 °C with air velocity between 2.5 m/s and 4.0 m/s. At tunnel temperatures below 77 °C, surface skin-over can trap water at the interface and produce bond loss during subsequent scoring; above 87 °C, blistering occurs on clay-coated board because the adhesive surface reaches the film formation temperature too rapidly. Pre-drying of the board surface is required at relative humidity above 60 %; a forced-air pre-dryer set at 50 °C for a residence time of 3–5 s is commonly used. Stack pressure should also be reduced until board moisture returns below 8.0 %.
High-shear circulation through piston-type diaphragm pumps temporarily lowers the apparent viscosity of the dispersion. In cylinder laminating equipment using a 100 L jacketed reservoir and a rotary lobe pump operating at 50 rpm, the Brookfield RVT viscosity of 2,500 mPa·s may fall by 10–15 % after 30 min of recirculation; after 1 h of undisturbed rest at 23 °C, the viscosity recovers to within 5 % of the original value. This shear-recovery behavior is important for consistent transfer roller metering. Variations in viscosity recovery greater than 15 % after a 1 h rest generally indicate incipient destabilization or microbial contamination; the reservoir should be sampled for pH drift and Gram-stain microscopy. The product should not be mixed with amine-based defoamers or ammonia-based pH adjusters beyond a pH of 6.0, because excessive base hydrolyzes the ester groups and can raise free acetic acid content.
Mechanical performance in wood assembly is typically characterized by compression shear specimens prepared from conditioned maple or birch blocks. After adhesive spread at 150–180 g/m² on one surface, open assembly of 5 min maximum, and clamping at 0.7 MPa for 2 h, specimens are conditioned for 24 h at 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity. Testing per ASTM D905 commonly yields wood failure rather than adhesive-layer failure on porous hardwood; however, the product is not formulated for structural exterior exposure. Under ASTM D870 water immersion, dried films soften within 24 h and lose a significant fraction of bond strength. The dispersion is therefore unsuitable for continuous immersion service, boiled-bond tests, or high-humidity laminates without additional crosslinking or edge sealing.
Compliance for food-contact interlayers must be confirmed against the grade-specific regulatory statement; the following matrix lists the principal frameworks and standards applicable to aqueous polyvinyl acetate adhesives used in paper packaging.
| Framework | Scope | Designation |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. FDA | Adhesives in food contact | 21 CFR 175.105 |
| U.S. FDA | Components of paper and paperboard in contact with aqueous and fatty foods | 21 CFR 176.170 |
| EU REACH | Registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemicals; SVHC screening | Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 |
| EU food contact framework | General requirements for food-contact materials | Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 |
| VOC determination | Aqueous adhesives and coatings | EPA Method 24 /ASTM D3960 |
| Adhesive terminology | Industry-defined adhesive terms | ASTM D907 |
For direct food-contact layers, migration testing under EU Regulation (EC) No 10/2011 may be required; polyvinyl acetate homopolymers are typically evaluated as a barrier component or interlayer rather than a direct-contact coating.
In comparison with solventborne polyurethane adhesives, the aqueous polyvinyl acetate dispersion has a significantly lower calculated volatile organic compound profile. The VOC content can be determined by EPA Method 24; published product-specific data for this configuration is limited, but aqueous PVAc adhesives typically remain below the U.S. EPA adhesive rule threshold of 250 g/L for laminating adhesives in the applicable category. Solventborne polyurethanes require explosion-proof handling and isocyanate exposure controls; Dur-O-Set C-325 does not require extraction ventilation for isocyanate vapor and can be cleaned with water before film formation. The dry film, however, exhibits lower elongation at break and lower resistance to plasticizer migration than crosslinked polyurethane films; it is not specified for automotive interior laminates or exterior structural joints. In wood assembly, the product’s shear strength after 24 h conditioning at 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity is typically measured by ASTM D905 using glued block assemblies.
